COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, EDUCATION & JOB CREATION
Creating jobs by hiring Community Champions to collect recyclable materials. They also visit schools and host workshops that educate students about the environment and the importance of recycling. Thirdly, they encourage community engagement by providing a meal for one community every month.
HOUSEHOLDS & BUSINESS SUBSCRIPTIONS
The subscriptions enable households or local businesses to subscribe to a program where materials for recycling are picked up weekly or bi-weekly. We then transport the materials to our processing facility.

Tortugas de Tola is a community collective that supports the conservation of sea turtles along the Emerald Coast.
Sea Turtle Hatcheries
Sea turtle hatcheries can be found up and down the Emerald Coast in Tola, including Chacocentre, Guasacate, Hacienda Iguana, Playa Redondo, and Playa Gigante.
Natural nests are usually the best for any species; however, unnatural light from beachfront houses confuses baby sea turtles because when they emerge from the nest, they instinctively head towards the brightest thing they see.
50 years ago, the brightest thing would have been the ocean waves. Today, it’s the lights from our lovely community.
Hence, there is a need to relocate nests to a place where they can hatch under protection. (Not just from wandering towards the glittery lights of our homes, but protection from poachers, dogs, birds, and crabs).
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Always stay at a distance of at least 3 meters, and never get in front of the turtle – always watch the turtle from behind so she won’t become nervous, feel threatened, and abandon her nest.
Remain very quiet and do not move around when the turtle is laying her eggs. Instead, sit down and relax while enjoying this natural miracle and pretty awesome experience!
Do NOT form a circle around the turtle; this can be very stressful for the turtle.
Sighting at night? Do not shine a light on the turtle because this can cause her to stop laying eggs and she will return to the ocean.
Taking pictures and especially using flash or other unnatural light is restricted and controlled by the guides.
Do not touch baby turtles leaving their nest. Bacteria, repellent, or any food can harm the hatchlings. Do not bring the turtle to the ocean. The journey to the sea builds the strength they’ll need when they hit the waves!
